On behalf of the Mitchell PTC, welcome back, and if you are a new parent, welcome to the Mitchell School!
The Parent Teacher Council (PTC) is an organization dedicated to enriching the education of our children and fostering a sense of community at the Mitchell School. We work in cooperation with the school’s administration and teachers to provide services, funding, volunteer support and programs that enhance the school experience. The continued success of this mission depends on your help. This packet of information outlines a variety of ways to participate in your child’s school life, both financially and through volunteer opportunities.
PTC meetings are held monthly, and we encourage all to attend. Our first meeting is on September 16th at 7:00 p.m. in the Media Center. Every parent is a member of the PTC and we look forward to having you join us. Our member volunteers support the school in many areas. Every day you will find parents assisting in the Media Center, classrooms and cafeteria. We provide a year’s worth of events that bring us together outside the classroom. PTC volunteers work together on the Family Fun, Beautification and Community Service Learning Committees. One of the things that we believe makes Mitchell stand out is parental involvement. Over 60% of our parents respond that they are interested in volunteering and being involved in enriching their child’s education.
Besides providing the school with irreplaceable volunteers, the PTC also fundraises. The money raised by the PTC is used to fund many worthwhile activities, services, and programs. A few examples:
- Our thriving Creative Arts program brings the world of theater, music, dance and authors into the school. Programs include: the Science Museum, Island Dance and The Improv Asylum.
- Enrichment Grant and Grade Level Initiative funding provide much needed support to teachers, programs, field trips and “the little extras” that supplement the curriculum in and out of the classroom
- PTC funds have helped establish the Outdoor Learning Center, located in the center courtyard of the building
- We financially support the METCO Family Friends Committee and its after school activities and the annual Invention Invasion (Mitchell School’s version of the science fair)
We operate with an annual budget of over $35,000. All dollars raised go directly to enriching the children’s education and beautification of the school. All family fun events are self-funded through the network of events.
Our fundraising begins each year with our annual Invest in Your Child campaign. We ask every family to contribute to this fund, which is our most important source of income. Invest in Your Child makes up 70% of our budget. Our goal this year is 100% participation and no donation is too small! You may donate online here or via the Invest in Your Child contribution envelope that is sent home with your child. To make up the balance of the budget, in the fall, we have the gift-wrap fundraiser with Innisbrook as our vendor.
Your participation ensures the future of our important work. Thank you for helping make the Mitchell School a wonderful place for our children to learn and grow.
